2009 Top 20 College Fantasy Football Tight Ends

Finding college fantasy football value at the tight end position is tough because so many factors go into a tight end’s success that they don’t control. Similar to wide receivers, offensive production for tight ends is generally 100% dependent on the success of a team passing game.

Mobile quarterbacks tend to force tight ends to block, leaving them unable to catch passes and produce meaningful fantasy stats. To counter offenses with mobile quarterbacks, pass-heavy spread offenses tend to help fantasy statistics of tight ends. Any team that has an offense racking up massive yardage totals and lighting up scoreboards is generally a good place to find a tight end in college fantasy football.

Thanks to the return of Max Hall and Sam Bradford this season, no college tight ends start the year with more fantasy football potential than Dennis Pitta of BYU and Jermaine Gresham of Oklahoma.

Based on his back-to-back seasons of quality fantasy football production, Pitta begins the 2009 college fantasy football season as our no. 1 tight end. Last season, the BYU senior caught 83 passes for 1083 yards and 6 touchdowns.

While Gresham is top end zone target for Oklahoma (26 touchdown receptions in 3 seasons), touchdowns are not something a fantasy football owner can count on. When you are drafting a top player at the receiver position, always look at receptions and yardage before considering touchdowns.
