College Fantasy Coach Preseason Top 25

Count CFC among the scores of other sources that place Alabama atop their preseason top 25.  Will the Crimson Tide be able to repeat as BCS champions?  History would suggest not seeing as how no team has ever repeated since the dawn of BCS era in 1998.  However, Alabama appears to be in as good a position as any to accomplish such a feat.

Alabama returns eight starters on offense, including the three headed monster of quarterback Greg McElroy, running back/Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram, and receiver Julio Jones.  The defense lost nine starters to graduation and the NFL, but with the likes of Dont’a Hightower, Marcel Dareus, and the defensive genius of head coach Nick Saban, the unit should recover nicely.

Ohio State leads the way among teams hoping to dethrone the champs.  Terrelle Pryor appears to have realized his potential after an phenomenal performance in last year’s Rose Bowl.  If these sorts of games become the norm in 2010, expect to see Pryor in New York come Heisman time, and the Buckeye’s in Glendale playing for it all.

Boise State, Florida, and Texas round out our top five.  Florida and Texas both lost a lot, but are programs that reload rather than rebuild.  Boise’s high preseason ranking puts them in position to become the first non BCS conference team to play for a National Title.

I know on paper it looks like Bama, Florida and Texas can/will reload and dominate at the top again. But recent history should be enough to show how hard that really is, and that these teams won't do it.
Florida from 2006 (national championship year) to 2007 lost a lot on defense and ended the year number 15, with 4 losses. Bama and the Gators will be good, but college football is a very competitive sport and these loses will be too much to overcome for a championship/top 5 run.
Texas from 2005 to 2006 went from undefeated to 3 losses as they replaced Vince Young. Again, the Longhorns have studs across the board, but that doesn't mean the Big 12 championship is in the bag. Teams have been waiting for this year (no Colt McCoy) and are ready to take out their frustrations.

Note — I had two from the mid-Majors in my Top 25. Look for Temple to dominate in the MAC and Troy is the other one that could sneak into the Top 25. Troy gets a chance to show what it's got in week two at Oklahoma State.
