Monday Man Crush: Taylor Potts, Texas Tech

Texas Tech junior quarterback Taylor Potts officially “arrived” on the college football scene on Saturday against Rice.

As Texas Tech quarterbacks normally do under the offensive direction of Mike Leach, Potts led the Red Raiser aerial assault to a whooping of Rice on Saturday in Lubbock, 55-10.

Performances like the one Potts had on Saturday are the reason he jumped right into the first round of many college fantasy football drafts despite playing in little more than garbage time his first two seasons with the Red Raiders. Give him a little credit, he was playing behind Graham Harrell, our no. 1 college fantasy quarterback in 2008.

His stat line on Saturday against the Owls was absolutely ridiculous: 36-57, 456 yards, 7 touchdowns.

Potts completed passes to 13 different receivers – his 7 TDs were one short of the school record. He now has back to back 400-plus games.

We had Potts ranked our no. 8 quarterback in fantasy football heading into the season, and I don’t see his fantasy production going any higher than a being at the top of the second tier of quarterbacks this season. Gunslingers like Keenum, Bradford, Tebow, McCoy, and Kaepernick are still probably just ahead of Potts.

One player to keep an eye on as Potts continues to develop this season is wideout Lyle Leong. Leong was Potts’ teammate at Abilene High and caught three of Potts’ TD passes on Saturday. Considering he is a Red Raider wideout, Leong is owned in only 46-percent of CBS Sports college fantasy leagues. Considering his history with Potts and his statline from Saturday – 9 catches, 117 yards, 3 TDs – he could quickly become a must-add in college fantasy football.
