So You’ve Got Jermaine Gresham…

It’s been a tough week if you’re a Sooner fan, and even tougher if you’re a Sooner fan playing college fantasy football.

After missing week 1′s contest against BYU due to a knee lockup, tight end Jermaine Gresham underwent arthroscopic knee surgery yesterday and it has been determined that he will miss the remainder of the season. Recovery could last as long as 5 months.

This is a big blow to the Sooners who also recently lost Sam Bradford for a few weeks. The loss of Gresham for the season also spoils the plans of several college fantasy football head coaches who likely took Gresham as the first or second tight end off the board in their draft.

According to the Sooners depth chart, Brody Eldridge is the tight end in line to receive the majority of the snaps in place of Gresham. Eldridge is 6’5″, 265 and has logged four catches each of the last two seasons.

An interesting note: none of the Sooners tight ends logged a catch in Saturday’s 14-13 loss to BYU.

Thanks to the loss of Gresham for the season, it’s very likely you are searching for a new tight end to take his place on your roster. Unless you can swing a trade for BYU’s Dennis Pitta, you aren’t likely to get production similar to Gresham’s from his position. The following tight ends listed below were very productive in week 1, however, and could provide a quality substitute for Gresham.

Ownership percentages are based on availability in CBS Sports’ game. Statistics are 2009 totals through week 1.

  • Tony Moeaki, Iowa (49%): 10 catches, 83 yards, 1 touchdown
  • Jamari Grant, Florida Atlantic (7%): 5 catches, 43 yards (FYI – according to Vince Mullins, Grant is my man crush)
  • Riar Green, Colorado (4%): 6 catches, 65 yards
  • Jimmy Scheidler, Bowling Green (2%): 4 catches, 72 yards
  • Orlando Arnold, Wyoming (0%): 4 catches, 47 yards
