Hokies Now Taylor’s Team

For the past two seasons, Tyrod Taylor and Sean Glennon have battled for the Virginia Tech starting quarterback position.

The two QB’s are as different as night and day.  Glennon is a proto-typical drop-back NFL-style quarterback who relies on his accurate passing game more than his legs.  Taylor likes to run, but also has a strong arm and Taylor clearly became the fan favorite during Virginia Tech’s 2008 season.  Glennon was often booed by students when he entered the game.

Taylor got the starting nod in five of the Hokies’ games during his freshman 2007 season and started ten of twelve games during his sophomore 2008 campaign.  Initially, it was thought that Taylor would be red-shirted for 2008 and the job would be Glennon’s.  But, after Glennon struggled in the opening game versus East Carolina, the job was given to Taylor.

After the Hokies’ lost to Miami 16-14 this past season, Taylor had an attrocious game against Duke.  He committed five turnovers in the first half against the Blue Devils and was replaced by Glennon.

This year, however, Glennon has graduated and the resurgent Virginia Tech offense, hampered by the dismissal of several top receivers in 2008, is back and a pre-season Top 10 team for 2009.  Taylor is a solid college fantasy football player in what should be an improved offense for Tech in 2009.

You wouldn’t know it, however, by looking at his stats.  Taylor rushed for a net 738 yards, an average of 5.0 per carry.  He only passed for two touchdowns with a 57.2% accuracy ranking and a 103.3 efficiency rating.  But, he has the talent to do better and Virginia Tech was very young squad in 2008, yet still won an Orange Bowl.

He’s a solid number two quarterback draft pick for the 2009 college fantasy football season.
