Navy Swims by the Run

If you’re looking for some running yards out of your quarterback, Navy’s Ricky Dobbs was your go-to guy last weekend.  Dobbs had 42 carries for 224 yards and 4 touchdowns in Navy’s 34-7 drubbing of SMU.

The Navy Midshipmen became the first major college football team to win a game without attempting a pass in 11 years. They ran the ball 77 times for 412 yards in a 34-7 time-of-possession nightmare against SMU (42:32). It is believed to be the first such time that Navy has done that in 60 years of keeping passing stats.

Navy has out-rushed its opponents 2479 to 978 this year in its first 8 contests.  The Midshipmen have been out-passed, however, by a mark of 496 to 1970.  In 8 games, the Navy is averaging only 6 passes per game!

Dobbs, who has appeared in 4 games this year, has rushed the ball 54 times on the season and passed just once.  He’s 1 for 1 through the air for 39 yards.

The last team to win a game without attempting a pass?  The Ohio Bobcats who beat Akron in 1997 21-17.
