Illini’s Juice, Hoosiers’ Lewis College Fantasy BCS Week 1 MVPs

Each week, College Fantasy Coach will take a look at the top players in college fantasy football, both BCS and non-BCS. * – weekly fantasy points are based on scoring settings established by CBSSports.com.

There were two BCS college fantasy superstars in week 1 of college football action. Your BCS co-college fantasy football MVPs during week 1 are:

Juice Williams, Junior, Illinois Fightin’ Illini

  • Week 1 Points: 45*
  • Stats: 26 completions, 451 passing yards, 10 rushing yards, 5 touchdowns

Kellen Lewis, Junior, Indiana Hoosiers

  • Week 1 Points: 45*
  • Stats: 17 completions, 144 pass yds, 185 rush yds, 4 total TDs

The Big 12 was supposed to be the BCS conference with huge college fantasy football performers, but two signal-callers out of the Big 10 dominated in week 1. It is interesting to note that the numbers of these two (and Chase Clement of Rice, our Mid-Major Week 1 MVP) did not receive a point deduction because their opponents were FBS teams. In the CBSSports.com college fantasy game, there is a point deduction for points put up against FCS competition.

Juice’s performance in week 1 was a complete surprise. The loss of stud running back Rashard Mendenhall in the backfield, erractic performance as a passer last season, and playing against a national championship contender (Missouri) should have tempered fantasy expectations for Juice in week 1. However, his week 1 performance shows great improvement as a passer. He was able to connect with wideout Arrelious Benn for 7 catches and 92 yards, and Will Judson completed a 65-yard TD as part of his 5 catch, 177 yd day.

As the season goes on, we expect Juice to do more with his feet than his arm. In BCS-only leagues, he is probably worth a bench spot at this point in the season. Add him to your watch list in leagues with a full FBS universe. Last season, he completed 153 passes for 1743 yards, rushed for 755 yards, and scored 20 total TDs. Due to his previous inconsistency, we cannot recommend starting him in leagues at this time.

Kellen Lewis took full advantage of a week 1 contest with Western Kentucky to develop a strong relationship with his new corp of wideouts (he lost James Hardy to the NFL during the offseason). After a sophomore season in which he completed 265 passes for 3043 yards, ran for 736 yards, and scored a total of 37 times, many of you drafted Lewis to be your starting QB this season.

Without Hardy, it looks like Lewis is going to take on more of a rushing responsibility… could he run for 1000 yards and throw for nearly 3000 this season? Numbers like that don’t seem out of the question when you consider the balanced numbers he produced against the Hilltoppers.

You didn’t necessarily need us to tell you this, but continue to start Lewis each week in college fantasy football.
